About your Coach and Community Host

🎬 What makes a short film stand out? I’ve spent my career finding the answer.

My name is Bob Degus. As a longtime voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, I’ve judged thousands of short-films hoping to get an Oscar nomination. I've mentored the next generation of filmmakers as an Oscar Gold Mentor and taught and authored filmmaking classes at the university level.

I’ve been on both sides of the filmmaking journey— as an Oscar Judge and as a filmmaker. I've directed and produced feature films to overseeing more than 25 movies as a production executive at New Line Cinema, including Pleasantville, Austin Powers, Friday, and Set It Off.

📽 But my passion for short films runs deep! 

Early in my Hollywood career, I was Head of Production at a company where I helped produce over 40 short films, which collectively received hundreds of film festival awards and 5 Oscar nominations during the time I ran the company — including two that I personally produced, one starring Brad Pitt.

Today, I continue to direct, write, and produce while helping emerging filmmakers master the art of short films and navigate the competitive world of festivals, funding, and distribution.
